No Serious Problems between China and US in Near Future: Singapore PM

Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said Wednesday in Singapore that he does not foresee serious problems between China and the United States in the next five to 10 years.

Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong said Wednesday in Singapore that he does not foresee serious problems between China and the United States in the next five to 10 years.

The prime minister made the point while delivering a speech at the 40th anniversary celebration lunch of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs.

"In this changed world, there will still be occasional alarm. But relations today among the major powers -the United States, Russia, China, Europe and Japan - are essentially stable," he said.

Stressing that healthy China-US relations are key to the stability and prosperity of East Asia, Goh Chok Tong said that thetwo countries need each other's cooperation in many areas althoughthere will be disagreements between them.

The United States needs China's cooperation in areas such as war against terrorism and China needs a stable relationship with the United States to concentrate on growing its economy, he said.

Goh said that China is rapidly opening up to the world and willadvance though there may be the occasional domestic hiccup.

He underlined that China's growth will have a positive impact on Singapore and the region at large, saying "China offers immenseopportunities, provided we restructure our economy and encourage entrepreneurship to take advantage of them."
