For the first time, private businessmen have taken over the lion's share of seats in the leadership of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, also known as the nongovernmental chamber of commerce of China.

At Wednesday's closing session of the Ninth Congress of the All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce, 233 deputies from the private sector were elected on to its Executive Committee, which has a total of 412 members.

Huang Mengfu was elected chairman of the federation.

Addressing the closing of the congress, federation Vice-Chairman Liang Jinquan said that China's private economy would enter a new phase of fast and healthy development in the next fiveyears.

The deputies from the private sector, as builders of socialism with Chinese characteristics, were expected to play a bigger role in the country's economic and social life, Liang noted.

Wang Guangying, a vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, and Sun Fuling and Jing Shuping, chairmen of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, handed out awards to 161 private companies for their outstanding role in helping redundantworkers from state factories find jobs, producing quality goods, or regularly paying tax.

During the five-day congress, the participants studied the documents adopted at the recent 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, revised the federation's Constitution, and elected its new leadership.
