Top Chinese Legislator Meets Australian Guests

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), met in Beijing Wednesday with Alan Ferguson, chair of the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee of the Australian federal parliament.

Reviewing his latest visit to Australia in September this year,in which China and Australia reached a consensus on furthering their all-round cooperative ties, Li said the friendly relationship between the Australian parliament and the Chinese NPCwould forge ahead rapidly thanks to Ferguson's current visit.

A series of celebratory activities had been launched this year by the two countries to mark the 30th anniversary of their diplomatic ties, Li said. They had also enjoyed productive cooperation in various areas, especially long-term cooperation in the fields of farming, metallurgy and energy.

Li said the 16th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) had set targets of building a comparatively comfortable society in an all-round way, building a new-style socialism with Chinese characteristics, and quadrupling China's GDP in 20 years.

The CPC leadership had achieved a smooth transition, fully demonstrating the energy and vitality of the CPC and China, said Li, voicing his belief that China's material, cultural and political development would make rapid progress in the future.

Though with different social systems, China and Australia were both located in the Asia-Pacific region and made joint efforts forpeace and development, Li said.

China's economic development would bring ample opportunity for Sino-Australian cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, sciences, technologies and the environment, said Li. He noted thatChina was willing to push forward Sino-Australian ties on the basis of mutual respect, equality and reciprocity, and seeking common ground while preserving differences.

The Chinese NPC and the Australian parliament had conducted various exchanges in recent years, which played an important role in improving mutual understanding and promoting bilateral relations, Li said.

Ferguson said the all-round development of Australia-China relations would bring great benefits to the Australian people.

The 30 years of diplomatic ties showed the Australia-China relationship enjoyed a solid basis and promising future, said Ferguson, adding the Australian parliament would contribute further to bilateral ties.

The Australian guests are here at the invitation of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee.
