Turkey to Revise Constitution for Joining EU

The Turkish government will revise the country's constitution and take a series of measures to help it join the European Union, Turkish ruling party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Paris Wednesday.

The Turkish government will revise the country's constitution and take a series of measures to help it join the European Union, Turkish ruling party leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in Paris Wednesday.

"The constitution will be revised to satisfy the criteria of Copenhagen and this will naturally involve the law of election andthe law on political parties," said Erdogan at a press conference.

"We will reinforce the liberty of expression and that of non-governmental organizations...A commission of integration with the European Union will be set up in the (Turkish) parliament," he said.

Accompanied by Turkish Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul, Erdogan, head of the Justice and Development Party, arrived in Paris Wednesday from Sweden, as part of his tour to European capitals to press forhis country's bid to join the European Union.

The European Union will fix a date to launch negotiations on Turkey's membership during its summit in Copenhagen on Dec. 12 and13.

"A priority will be given to the ratification of international conventions and we expect that a date will be proposed to Turkey at the Copenhagen summit to start talks on its admission," said Erdogan, leader of the Justice and Development Party.
