US Sees Historic Opportunity for Cyprus Solution: Powell

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday that a plan proposed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan offers a historic opportunity to reunite the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell said Wednesday that a plan proposed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan offers a historic opportunity to reunite the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

"I hope that both sides realize that this is a historic opportunity to solve a long-standing problem," Powell told reporters after talks with visiting Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou.

He said the United States hopes that both Greek and Turkish Cypriots will respond in a way that allows the process to move forward.

"Europe is making a historic decision on the 12th of December, letting in 10 new countries to the European Union, and hopefully, we'll be able to get a solution on Cyprus," Papandreou said.

The UN plan submitted by Annan earlier this month called on both Greek and Turkish Cypriots to accept it until the EU summit in Copenhagen on Dec. 12. If they agree, the European Union would admit the united island as a new member.
