Italian Hijacker Detained in Lyon, 'Apparently Unbalanced': Official

An Italian, who threatened to hijackan Air France airliner flying to Paris from Bologna (Italy) with what he called a bomb on board, was detained in Lyon on Wednesday.

An Italian, who threatened to hijackan Air France airliner flying to Paris from Bologna (Italy) with what he called a bomb on board, was detained in Lyon on Wednesday.

The man, identified as Stefano Savorani, was 29 years old. He was "apparently an unbalanced person," said the prefecture of Rhone.

The plane, a Boeing 737 with 67 passengers and eight crew members on board, was diverted to the French city of Lyon, in the central southern prefecture of Rhone. No one was injured.

The plane landed at the military zone of the airport of Lyon-Saint-Exupery at 15:20 (14:20 GMT) soon after the threat of hijackon board.

At 15:45 (14:45 GMT), all passengers got off the plane safely and the hijacker was neutralized by the French police at about 16:10 (15:10 GMT).

During the flight, the man said there was a remote-control bombin the plane. He also mentioned the Al-Qaeda terrorist network, reported Agence France-Presse quoting undisclosed sources.
