The number of mobile phones exported through Shanghai Port rose dramatically to 11.14 million during the first 10 months of the year, up 53.4 percent year-on-year, Customs figures show.

The mobile phones were mostly produced by overseas-funded companies, including Siemens, Motorola, Ericsson and NEC.

Experts with the Customs office said non-overseas-invested domestic mobile phones accounted for 100,000 units during the period, up significantly from 50 for the same period last year.

They attributed the sharp growth in exports to drastic tariff cuts on imported mobile phone parts following China's entry into the World Trade Organization, making Chinese-made products more price-competitive on the world market.

Germany was the biggest export market for China-produced mobilephones with a total of 5.96 million units, or 53.5 percent of the total.

Other export markets included the Netherlands, South Africa, Austria, Spain, India and Morocco.
