A promotional campaign was held Friday in Urumqi for scientific and technological cooperative projects provided by some members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Representatives from more than 100 Chinese companies and scores of CIS businesses gathered in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in northwest China, for the one-day event, sponsored by the city's New- and High-tech Industrial Development Zone.

The zone authorities said the campaign will help more Chinese companies seize commercial opportunities in the CIS, particularly in its central Asian member states.

The event was also aimed at recommending patented technologies of CIS members to Chinese companies, an official with the zone said.

Companies from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakstan and other central Asian nations displayed their investment projects, which involve paper-making, electronics, chemicals and pharmaceutical industries.

Anatoliy V. Korniyenko, a businessman from Ukraine, said that he hoped an exchange and cooperative mechanism would be established as soon as possible to promote economic development in China and the central Asian nations.

Bordering central Asia, Xinjiang has long maintained close economic and trade relations with CIS members.
