Forum on Cultural Development Held in Shanghai

Over 100 officials, experts and scholars are in Shanghai to attend a two-day seminar on the development of the country's cultural sector.

Over 100 officials, experts and scholars are in Shanghai to attend a two-day seminar on the development of the country's cultural sector.

At the "Forum on China's Cultural Industry in the 21st Century"which started Friday, some speakers urged greater attention develop culture through market means.

Hu Huilin, a professor with the Shanghai Jiaotong University, said the government should develop its own mechanism and strategy for exporting and importing cultural products, and train business people in the cultural sector who are aware of their historical mission in the new century.

Miao Qihao, deputy curator of the Shanghai Library, called for reforms in the cultural sector to let culture play a major role inChina's development strategy.

The forum is co-sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and the Shanghai Jiaotong University.
