Dairy Farms Sprout Around China's Capital

A cluster of dairy farms have been set up around Beijing, China's capital, and nearby Tianjin, an important manufacturing base, to help improve the diet of residents in the two cities and in neighboring Hebei Province.

Latest statistics show a total of 700 model dairy farms have been established around Beijing and Tianjin, with livestock numbers reaching 280,000 animals.

According to the Chinese Government's plan, 200 more model dairy farms and a number of dairy production bases will be built in Hebei's Tangshan, Shijiazhuang, Baoding and Langfang cities, which are near Beijing and Tianjin. To supplement dairy resources,another 300 farms will be established in the Zhangjiakou, Qinhuangdao, Cangzhou, Hengshui and Xingtai of Hebei, which are further away from Beijing and Tianjin.

When these projects are completed, Hebei will boast 924,000 head of dairy cattle and an annual output of 1.37 million tons of dairy products, ensuring a sufficient supply of milk for the two major municipalities and the province.

There are also plans to speed up the breeding of selected dairying species.

Current average annual per-capita milk consumption stands at only 6.6 kg in China, and the per-capita consumption is now 18 kg in Beijing and Tianjin.
