Power-hungry Guangdong Province in south China had completed eight major power grid projects by Saturday, significantly improving the structure of its power network and ending an electricity shortage across the Pearl River Delta.

Demand for power has kept growing in the province in recent years as the local economy booms, resulting in overload on the provincial power grid.

Manufacturers and residents in the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone and Dongguan City on the Pearl River Delta often suffered blackouts in summer when demand for power peaked, according to a Guangdong trade official.

To ease the shortage, Guangdong started building eight major power projects at the end of last year at a cost of 200 million yuan (US$24 million).

From the second half of this year till the end of 2005, the province will build supporting projects for the west-to-east power transmission program at an estimated cost of 7.9 billion yuan (US$951. 8 million).

A further 12 major power projects will also be built in the next couple of years.

As an economic powerhouse in China, the Pearl River Delta now contributes about 10 percent of the country's annual GDP.
