Japan's Public Security Investigation Agency on Monday filed a request to keep the AUM Shinrikyo cult under surveillance for another three years, Kyodo News reported.

The agency filed the request with the Public Security Examination Commission to extend the surveillance period, which will expire in January next year, Kyodo said.

The request is on grounds that Chizuo Matsumoto, founder of the cult who is accused of having masterminded the 1995 nerve gas attack on the Tokyo subway system, "still wields power over the cult" and can order indiscriminate mass killings, it said.

The commission will determine whether to extend the period or not after studying the contents of the file, including the reason for the agency's request, and hearing opinions from the cult on the issue, it added.
