China will continue to support the United Nations' efforts to fight drug-related crime worldwide, a top Chinese official assured the UN chief of drugs and crime issues here Tuesday.

State Councillor Luo Gan told Antonio Costa, executive director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, that the Chinese government had always attached importance to international cooperation in combating drugs and preventing crime.

As long-standing problems of the human society, drugs and transnational organized crime had posed significant threats to regional and global peace and stability, Luo said.

He said international cooperation must be strengthened to tackle sharply-increasing organized and transnational crimes in the wake of rapid economic globalization and frequent international exchanges.

China expected the UN Office on Drugs and Crime to play a greater role, Luo told Costa, assuring him the office's work wouldcontinue to get support from China.

Costa also said he wished for further cooperation between his office and the Chinese government, saying China had contributed to the fight against drugs in Asia, as well as regional efforts to prevent crime.
