There were political instead of legal reasons for Denmark's refusal to extradite a top Chechen separatist leader to Russia,Russia's justice minister Yuri Chaikasaid on Tuesday.

"Apparently, political motivations have taken the upper hand over the legal aspects of this issue," Chaika said, commenting on Denmark's refusal to turn Chechen envoy Akhmed Zakayev over to Russia.

"It had been clear from the procrastination and the delays withthe solution of this problem that the Danish side did not intend to extradite Zakayev to Russia anyway," Chaika said.

He claimed that Russia had provided Denmark with all necessary documents to extradite Zakayev. "I'm sure that the Danish side hadenough evidence to extradite a Russian citizen charged with major crimes," he added.

Danish authorities said on Tuesday that Zakayev had been released.

Zakayev was detained at Moscow's request on Oct. 30 in the Danish capital Copenhagen where he had been attending a World Chechen Congress. Russia claims he is linked to terrorist attacks on civilians including a theater raid in Moscow last month that left at least 128 hostages killed.
