The King of Thailand reaffirmed his wish for the military to continue its anti-drug operations, the Bangkok Post reported Wednesday.

The King gave his advice on drug suppression to Thai Supreme Commander Surayud Chulanont, after he inspected the royal guards at the Royal Plaza on Monday for the annual oath of allegiance ceremony to mark the King's birthday on Dec. 5.

The report said the king's message for the military to help suppress drugs was the second in a week. The first was made to a group of newly promoted military generals last week.

Surayud was quoted as saying that the King had expressed grave concern over the spread of drugs and instructed the military to seek cooperation from other agencies to suppress narcotics.

He indicated that the Supreme Command had worked out a 4-year plan for drug suppression from 2003-2006, with border villages being the main targets.

The military would strengthen those communities and join hands with locals in combating drugs, he added.

The report also quoted sources of military as saying that the supreme commander had appointed Naowarat Thongkhamwong as chief ofthe 106th Joint Operation Command, replacing Noraset Issarangkura na Ayutthaya.

The joint operation command, which was set up in 2000, is responsible for drug suppression.

It gathers information about drugs from the three armed forces and also monitors the activities of military officers suspected ofbeing involved in the drug trade.
