Train Derails in Western Canada

An 80-car freight train carrying molten sulphur derailed in the south of Canada's western Alberta Province early Wednesday, causing a chemical fire and a brief evacuation of nearby residents, reports reaching here said.

An 80-car freight train carrying molten sulphur derailed in the south of Canada's western Alberta Province early Wednesday, causing a chemical fire and a brief evacuation of nearby residents, reports reaching here said.

A railway official said that the accident took place near the village of Seven Persons in southern Alberta. 42 cars on the east-bound train left the tracks and sulphur began leaking out from some of the cars that ruptured.

The ensuing fire released hydrogen sulphide into the air beforefirefighters extinguished it.

The train, which wasn't carrying any other chemicals, had an engineer and conductor as crew. Neither was injured.

Officials from the Transportation Safety Board, Transport Canada and Alberta Environment were at the scene investigating.
