Chinese Defense Minister Meets Int'l Symposium Delegates

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met Thursday with delegates to the International Symposium on the Asia-Pacific Security Situation.

Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian met Thursday with delegates to the International Symposium on the Asia-Pacific Security Situation.

Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China and a state councilor, said the security situation in the region was stable in general, but destabilizing factors existed.

China was fostering a new security concept of mutual trust and benefit, equality and coordination, promoting multilateral security and security cooperation based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence and dialogue and negotiation, Chi said.

He expressed his hope that the experts could increase mutual trust and dissolve skepticism through exchanges of views, contributing to security and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Eric Hotung, chairman of the Hotung Institute of International Studies, said the symposium was a success, and he hoped that more of such events would be held to offer scholars opportunities for exchanges on the war against terrorism.

Sponsored by the China Institute for International Strategic Studies and the Hotung Institute for International Studies, the symposium was attended by more than 40 experts from 13 countries, who exchanged views on the Asia-Pacific security situation and security issues in east Asia, south Asia and central Asia.
