Chinese Volunteers Get Awards
Three Chinese volunteers won a national award for excellent volunteers, the first of its kind, in
Beijing
on Thursday, the International Volunteers Day.
The gold prize for service, the first since China began registering volunteers nationwide last April, was jointly presented by the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China (CYL), the leading body of the mass youth organization, and the China Young Volunteers Association (CYVA).
The prize was given to Li Honglin, Xu Ershou and Meng Xiaoyan.
The slim but energetic Li, leader of China's first group of young volunteers serving abroad, offered Chinese training courses to Laotian people from May to November this year.
After retirement, Xu joined a senior volunteer service program and has contributed nearly 10,000 hours of service.
Meng, studying for a master's in law at Beijing University, donates much of her time to offering free legal aid to China's poor and needy people.
Figures from the CYVA show China now has 80 million volunteers nationwide, with young people and college students making up the majority.
The volunteers work in such fields as community service, medical service, environmental protection, poverty relief and helping the disabled.
