Israeli troops killed nine Palestinians and wounded 15 others in a pre-dawn raid on Friday at Al Bureij Refugee camp, in central Gaza Strip, Palestinian doctors said.

Ahmed Rabah, chief of Al Aqsa Hospital in central Gaza Strip, said that nine people from two families were killed, and at least 15 others injured, most of whom were in critical condition.

He said the nine were killed after being hit by fragments of the shells fired from tanks at several houses in the eastern part of the refugee camp. It was difficult to identify most of them.

A Palestinian public security spokesman confirmed that at least 40 tanks and armored personnel carries, supported by Apache attack helicopters, entered the refugee camp from the Jewish settlement of Nitzarim south of Gaza City.

Residents of the camp said the Israeli troops destroyed two houses in the refugee camp during the operation by firing missiles. The houses belonged to two militants, who were killed in carrying out attacks against Israel.

The latest Israeli operation lasted about three hours, said witnesses who saw the tanks and armored vehicles pulling out from the camp.

Israeli military sources confirmed the troops were conducting a targeted operation, but declined to give more details.

Israel sends troops every few days to the Gaza Strip to track down Palestinian militants it blames for suicide attacks that have killed scores of Israelis since September 2000 when peace talks stalled.
