While multinationals worldwide slashed spending on research and development (R&D) this year, Dow Corning Corporation, a U.S.-based silicon technology giant, has beefed up its R&D muscle in China by opening an application center in Shanghai.

Dow Corning chief technology officer James White said the opening of its China Application Center represented the company's latest contribution to its global strategy of science and technology excellence and stronger collaboration with customers. The move showed Dow Corning's long-term commitment to expanding its China market.

The state-of-the-art center has six laboratories and employs over 20 application engineers and technical staff. It is designed to conduct joint research with local customers for new product design and uses in such fields as construction, textiles, paper processing, oil and gas, personal care, auto care, power generation and electronics.

Dow Corning greater China regional manager W.K. Ho said the company was staking greater resources on further growth in China, already the fastest growing area in its global business.

Ho predicts double-digit sales growth in China for 2002, more than the expected eight percent growth of China's gross domestic product (GDP).

Dow Corning reaped sales revenue of 2.44 billion US dollars in 2001. More than half the revenue was from Asia and other places outside the United States.
