NATO Secretary General George Robertson arrived in Moscow on Sunday evening for a joint Russia-NATO conference on cooperation in anti-terrorism operations scheduled for Monday.

Robertson told reporters after his arrival that if Russia and NATO want to deter the evils of terrorism, they should transform both mutual relations and their armed forces.

He said that during talks with the Russian side, he wants to convey the message that if NATO and Russia work together, they will overcome the threats they both face.

This is Robertson's first visit to Russia since last month's NATO summit in Prague, the Republic of Czech, in which the military alliance invited seven central and eastern European countries, including three former Soviet republics in the Baltics,to join hands.

Moscow said that it considers the NATO expansion unnecessary but refrained from stronger criticism.
