32 Killed in Traffic Accident in Nigeria

At least 32 people have been killed in a traffic accident in southern Nigeria, local newspaper Sunday Punch reported.

At least 32 people have been killed in a traffic accident in southern Nigeria, local newspaper Sunday Punch reported.

The report said the tragedy occurred at the weekend in southernOsun State along the highway connecting the southern towns of Ife and Ondo.

Nearly all passengers in two mini commercial buses were killed in the wake of a head-on collision of the two vehicles coming fromopposite directions, the report said.

But four people narrowly escaped death and are now on danger inhospital, the newspaper added.

The poor condition of roads, over-speeding, over-loading and reckless driving are blamed to the main cause of the frequent roadaccidents in the country.

According to official figures, 7,769 people were killed in 12,954 road accidents in 2001, representing an increase of 1,174 in comparison with the death toll of 6,055 recorded in 11,788 reported accident cases in 2000.
