Champions Trophy winners China won bronze at the women's field hockey World Cup in Perth on Sunday as they brushed aside Olympic champions Australia 2-0.

China were in lead in the 14th minute when Ma Yibo converted their first penalty corner with a flick and then made it 2-0 as Chen Xiaoxia scored three minutes from half time.

Australia launched surging attacks in the second half but squandered opportunities, including six penalty corners, to change the score.

China's victory improves on their fifth place at the 2000 Olympic Games and follows their golds in the Champions Trophy in Macao in August and Asian Games in September.

It was the Australians' worst performance since they took fifthplace at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics following their gold medal performance at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Australia won gold in both the 2000 Olympic Games and the previous World Cup in 1998.

China's coach Kim Chang-Back, who coached South Korea to bronze in the World Cup in Sydney in 1990, was satisfied with the result.
