Sino-America Relations Important for World Peace: Li Peng

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with a delegation headed by Henry J. Hyde, chairman of the international relations committee of the US House of Representatives.

Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), met Monday with a delegation headed by Henry J. Hyde, chairman of the international relations committee of the US House of Representatives.

Li said the NPC valued relations with the US Congress, and China invited more US congressmen to visit to enhance understanding and friendship.

He said China-US relations were generally developing well. During his October US visit, Chinese President Jiang Zemin had a successful meeting with US President George W. Bush.

Exchanges and cooperation in fighting terrorism, and trade and economic cooperation were registering new progress and consultation and coordination in significant international and regional issues was bearing fruit.

Li said these advances benefited both peoples and was conduciveto regional and world peace and stability.

Li briefed the guests on China's stance against terrorism and the Iraq issue.

Li said both the Republican and the Democratic parties of the US had demonstrated support for the improvement and development ofChina-US ties, and many friends in the US Congress had done a lot to enhance mutual understanding and friendship.

He said China and the United States had much in common despite their disparities, and the two nations should seek common ground and shelve their differences for the benefit of relations.

Hyde expressed his admiration for China's impressive achievements since his last visit two decades ago. He stressed theUnited States and China had common interests and in the contemporary world and should promote ties and strengthen cooperation.

He expressed satisfaction with cooperation in the war against terrorism after the September 11 terrorist attacks, thanking Chinafor its support on behalf of the US Congress.

Li also briefed the guests on the 16th National Congress of theCommunist Party of China, and the development of democracy and thelegal system in the country.
