Last Poisoned Child Leaves Hospital

The last of the 70 children who were poisoned at their kindergarten two weeks ago has left hospital in Wuchuan City, south China's Guangdong province, after getting the all clear from doctors.

The last of the 70 children who were poisoned at their kindergarten two weeks ago has left hospital in Wuchuan City, south China's Guangdong province, after getting the all clear from doctors.

Seventy children and two teachers fell ill after lunch on November 25 and were sent to hospital for emergency treatment. Their food was found to have been laced with "Dushuqiang", a common kind of strong rat poison made of tetramine.

Three days later police arrested Huang Hu, a self-employed doctor and kindergarten operator. He confessed that he had acted out of jealousy at the success of the nearby rival kindergarten, the Kangle No.2 Kindergarten in Huangpo town.

On the evening of November 24, Huang sneaked into the kitchen of the kindergarten and put the poison in the salt, he told the police.

Zhang Dejiang, secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, ordered an all-out effort to save the lives of the victims and severely punish the person responsible.

Local hospitals asked specialists from Guangzhou and Zhanjiang, two big cities in the province, to help with the emergency. Local medical staff and volunteers are to monitor the victims for a further three months.
