A year after China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) see both government officials and farmers in east China's Shandong province smiling after initially suffering a plunge in farm produce exports.

Chen Yanming, vice-governor of the province, has announced that the region's total value of agri-products exports in the first ten months reached 4.13 billion US dollars, a year-on-year rise of 16.9 percent.

The coastal province suffered from a drastic drop in meat, vegetables and fishery exports in the first half year when European Union nations, Japan and other countries and regions drove up technology barriers.

The first few months after China's celebration of WTO entry turned sour for this major agri-products export province, which used to account for a quarter of the country's total, as it experienced a 30 percent drop in agri-products exports.

Chen referred the mystery of the rebound to the adoption of stricter international standards in production.

The province now has 2,520,000 mu of farmland (168,000 hectare) set aside for organic vegetable production, 90 percent of which is authenticated by either international or domestic standards.

In early November, a local apple and pear sales firm in Yantai, namely the Yantai Fufazhongji Company, exported large quantities of apples and pears for the first time to Canada and the United States, both of which are reputed for strict quarantine controls.

Besides quality control, the province also tried to enlarge production bases and open more markets. For instance, meat export firms diverted to export cooked food when their refrigerated food was banned from overseas markets.
