Chinese Military Leader Meets Romanian Visitor

China hopes the friendly cooperation between its armed forces and that of Romania will continue to make sound and steady progress in the new century, says Cao Gangchuan, vice-chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission Tuesday.

China hopes the friendly cooperation between its armed forces and that of Romania will continue to make sound and steady progress in the new century, says Cao Gangchuan, vice-chairman of the Chinese Central Military Commission Tuesday.

When meeting Mihail Popescu, the Romanian army chief of general staff, Cao said China was willing to raise bilateral relations to a new level, based on equality, mutual benefit and non-interference in each another's internal affairs.

With their traditional close friendship, the two countries' people had supported and helped each other in safeguarding national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as in international affairs since setting up diplomatic ties,Cao said.

Friendly cooperation in politics, economics, culture, science and the military field had made gratifying progress in recent years, he said, expressing his confidence that Popescu's visit would promote ties between the armed forces of the two countries.

Popescu said the Chinese people, led by the Communist Party of China (CPC), had made remarkable achievements in their modernization drive. He offered his congratulations on the successof the CPC's 16th National Congress.

Romania had kept to the "one-China" policy, and hoped China would achieve reunification as soon as possible, he said, expressing satisfaction at the current relations of friendly cooperation between the two countries and their armed forces.
