Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Liu Jianchao Tuesday spoke positively about the Chinese government's signing of the Firearms Protocol which supplements the UN Convention Against Transnational Organized Crimes.

Liu said at a regular press conference in Beijing that China's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Wang Yingfan, on behalf of the Chinese government had signed the Protocol Against the Illicit Manufacturing of and Trafficking in Firearms, Their Parts and Components and Ammunition on Dec. 9.

Liu said with the rampant growth in such international organized crime as terrorism, armed drug trafficking and smugglingin recent years, all countries worldwide hoped to strengthen cooperation in preventing and combating the illegal manufacture and transport of firearms.

Against this background the Firearms Protocol was worked out through negotiations in March 2001, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in the international community to prevent and fight international organized crime through the campaign against illegalmanufacturing and transporting firearms, said Liu.

He said the Chinese government had always taken a constructive attitude to negotiations over the Protocol, and played a positive role in its completion.

The signing of the Protocol once again demonstrated the Chinesegovernment's firm stance in strengthening cooperation with the international community and fighting against the illegal manufacture and transfer of small arms, said Liu.

The move would also play a positive role in controlling the manufacture, storage, use and transfer of domestic small arms, andmaintaining social security and stability, said Liu.
