The Asia-Pacific region has taken the role of leading the global telecom industry out of crisis, according to the International Telecom Union (ITU).

ITU, the world's largest non-profit body in charge of global telecom policies, said in a report released Wednesday in Bangkok that it sees the region driving the recovery of global telecom sector, dueto the high demand for telecom services here and its technological leadership.

While the global telecom industry has been mired in crisis since early 2000 and growth of global telephone subscription declined last year for the first time in a decade, Asia-Pacific region's extraordinary strength in consumer demand makes a difference, it said.

A good example of this resilience is that those regional economies in the early stage of transition from a developing to a developed telecom economy recorded a total telecom density (fix-line and mobile) between 5 to 25 subscribers per 100 persons at the end of 2001.

Between 1995 and 2001, the average growth rate in total telephone subscribers of these economies in the region was 36 percent per year, compared with the 19-percent growth achieved in the rest of the world.

More important, the Asia-Pacific region is showing its leading place in the development of high-speed services and the third-generation (3G) mobile phone network, which are believed to hold the keys of global telecom recovery, said ITU.
