Hundreds of federal emergency workers headed for Guam on Wednesday and millions of dollars in supplies were being airlifted in the aftermath of Typhoon Pongsona.

According to preliminary estimates released Tuesday, more than 2,000 homes were destroyed and one woman died as the typhoon Pongsona tore across the U.S. island territory with up to 180 mph wind.

The only death so far attributed to the storm Sunday was an elderly woman who was cut badly and then went into cardiac arrest, authorities said.

No official estimate of damage was available. Officials have not yet determined the number of people injured or left homeless by the storm.

The storm also left more than 300 people homeless on Saipan and Rota in the neighboring Northern Mariana Islands, said officials in the U.S. commonwealth. No major injuries were reported.

Guam is west of the international date line, about 3,700 miles southwest of Hawaii.
