Eleven scientists and a Holocaust survivor who turned his pain into stirring literature received Nobel Prizes from King Carl XIV Gustaf in a lavish ceremony Tuesday in the Swedish capital.

Laureates in white bow ties and tails accepted awards in literature, physics, chemistry, medicine and economics on the stage of Stockholm's blue-hued Konserthuset concert hall.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded earlier in the day to former President Jimmy Carter. The separate Peace Prize ceremony was held in Oslo, Norway, according to the will of Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who established the awards.

Each prize carries a monetary award of $1 million.

Hungarian Jew Imre Kertesz received the literature prize for his novels describing life in Nazi concentration camps.

Japanese laureate Masatoshi Koshiba and Americans Raymond Davis Jr. and Riccardo Giacconi won the physics prize.

Chemistry prize winners were John B. Fenn of the United States, Koichi Tanaka of Japan and Swiss scientist Kurt Wuethrich.

The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics was awarded to U.S. and Israeli citizen Daniel Kahneman and American Vernon L. Smith.

Britons Sydney Brenner and John E. Sulston shared the medicine prize withH. Robert Horvitz of the United States.

The Nobel Prizes are usually announced in October and are handed out every year on Dec. 10, the anniversary of the 1896 death of Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. The first awards ceremony took place in 1901.
