The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region registered 1.91 billion US dollars worth of foreign trade in the first ten months of the year, up 28.9 percent from the same period last year.

Imports accounted for 739 million US dollars, up 65.4 percent, and exports were 1.171 billion US dollars, up 13 percent, said local customs sources.

Guangxi was second of the 12 western Chinese provinces, autonomous regions and Chongqing municipality in terms of total exports.

Ren Xiekang, director of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Regional Bureau of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation, attributed the success to the region's efforts in highlighting key tasks in foreign trade and adjusting export structures in the year since China was admitted to the World Trade Organization.

From January to October, exports of both high-tech commodities, and machinery and electronic products showed double-digit growth.

Border trade with Viet Nam also rose by 115 percent from January to October.

While retaining traditional markets in southeast Asia, the United States and European Union, Guangxi has redoubled efforts toexpand business in India and Russia since the beginning of the year.

State-owned companies, private firms, and foreign-funded businesses are playing active roles in exporting, said Ren.
