The United States has let go the seized Scud shipment ordered by Yemen from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Yemeni government announced late Wednesday.

Washington decided to release the cargo ship loaded with 15 DPRK-made Scuds after a telephone conversation between Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh and US Vice President Dick Cheney, a spokesman for the Yemeni government said.

On an earlier occasion, Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Baker Abdullah al-Kurbi summoned US Ambassador Edmund Hull to his office to protest the interception and demand the immediate return of the captured missiles.

The cargo ship was intercepted by two Spanish navy vessels on Monday on tips from US intelligence.

The Spanish navy said the ship was sailing without a flag when they stopped it on the high seas off the coast of Yemen.

US naval forces in the Indian Ocean later took over the ship along with the missiles, Spanish Defense Minister Federico Trillo said Wednesday.

US officials said they think it appropriate to intercept a suspect ship which had no flag.

The seized shipment is considered deviation from a deal between Yemen and the United States on banning the weapons of the kind, according to US defense officials.
