China, Thailand, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan will host matches of a club competition meant to develop Asia into a new power in world soccer, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) said Thursday in Kuala Lumpur.

The four countries will host the group stages of the AFC Champions League on March 9-15, the confederation said in a reporton its Web site.

Peter Velappan, AFC General Secretary, said: "The venues are spread throughout Asia, giving spectators from various regions the opportunity to watch the best club teams compete for the biggest ever prize offered by the AFC."

The confederation launched the 3 million US dollars continent-wide club competition in August. Modeled on the European Champions League, the tournament is the richest in Asia and replaces three existing tournaments.
