More Leaders Greet Hu Jintao on Election as CPC Leader

More leaders of friendly countries, political parties and organizations have sent congratulatory messages over the past few days to Hu Jintao on his election as general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

More leaders of friendly countries, political parties and organizations have sent congratulatory messages over the past few days to Hu Jintao on his election as general secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

US President George W. Bush said in his message, "I recall with pleasure your successful visit to the United States last May, and I look forward to working with you to promote bilateral relations and cooperation on global peace and prosperity."

"My administration is committed to realizing a constructive and cooperative relationship between the United States of America and the People's Republic of China," Bush added.

Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien said in his message that he expects to meet with Hu at a convenient time, adding that he sincerely hopes for further development of friendly, cooperative ties based on mutual benefit between Canada and China. He also wishes the Chinese people more prosperity under Hu's leadership.

In his message, Greek Prime Minister Constantine Simitis, who is also president of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, expressed the belief that China will move forward along the path of reform and development for the benefit of the Chinese people, thus contributing to world peace and stability as well. Noting that Greece will take over the rotating presidency of the European Union (EU) in the first half of next year, Simitis expressed the hope that EU-China ties, especially Greek-Chinese relations, will enjoy further development.

Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana, in his message, wished Hu great success in fulfilling his glorious and lofty tasks. He also expressed the hope that the brotherly ties between Madagascar and China and bilateral cooperation based on sincerity and mutual benefit will be further promoted and deepened in the future.

Pedro Verona Rodriques Pires, president of Cape Verde, hoped that Hu will make new achievements in the great cause of China's progress and development as well as the world's peace, dialogue and security.

He said Cape Verde and China have maintained a profound and stable friendship, and the two governments are promoting such friendly cooperation. The two nations are facing the same task of eliminating poverty and realizing sustainable development and theyshare the same stance on international issues such as maintaining the function of the United Nations, seeking global peace, settling international disputes peacefully and building a safer and more predictable world, he said.

Paul Biya, president of Cameroun and of the Cameroun People's Democratic Rally, wished Hu success in leading the CPC. He also wished in the message that the traditional and friendly ties between the two parties would be further enhanced.

Chilean President Ricardo Lagos Escobar expressed warm congratulations in his message. The two nations have witnessed smooth progress in their ties, with increasing areas of common ground, since the establishment of diplomatic relations more than 30 years ago, he noted. He expressed his sincere wish for the two states to further enhance friendly ties with joint efforts and forHu to make new achievements in his work.

Among those who sent congratulations to Hu are Chairman of Indonesia's Functional Groups Agung Laksono, Chairman of Sri Lanka's United National Party Malith Samarawickrama, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka Gunasekera, Kuwaiti First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Sabahal-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah, Secretary-General of Cyprus' Progressive Party of the Working People Dimitris Christofias, Speaker of the Assembly of Croatia Zlatko Tomcic, and Chairman of the House of Republics of the National Assembly of Belarus A. P. Voitovich.
