The cholera epidemic has claimed 119 lives in Uganda since its resurgence this year, Commissioner of community health Dr. Sam Okware has said.

Okware was quoted by the New Vision newspaper on Friday as saying that 2,023 cases had been reported this year, most of them in districts bordering the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Okware said the number of cases reported in Kampala and neighboring Wakiso district had by Wednesday hit 34, with two deaths.

He said the situation was under control, with the number of reported cases dropping from 16, when the epidemic broke out on November 25, to one case reported on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a statement from Health Minister Jim Muhwezi which was read by Okware said the cholera strain that hit the DRC borderdistricts of Nebbi, Arua, Hoima, Masindi, Bundibugyo and Kasese inJune, was different from that in Kampala.

Okware said the serotype cholera el-torogawa reported in the border districts, could have been imported from the DRC by refugees and through cross-border trade.

He added that the el-torinaba serotype now on rampage in Kampala is the same type that hit the city in 1997.
