Twenty-nine Israeli parties have registered with the Central Elections Committee for the 16th Knesset (parliament) elections slated for Jan. 28, 2003, Israel Radio reported on Friday.

The final list of parties, including 16 existing ones and 13 new ones, can no longer be changed, the committee's chairman was quoted as saying.

Among the 29 parties, the Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud and the Labor Party chaired by Haifa Mayor Amram Mitzna, the biggest two parties in Israel's political arena, would run a pin-to-pin competition for the general elections.

Both the two have released on Thursday their campaign slogans.

The Likud's slogan claims "The nation wants Sharon," which is focusing on the prime minister's experience and was used by Sharon in the Likud primary elections against Foreign Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

The Labor's slogan, however, is aimed at slamming Likud's ability to solve the country's problems, saying "Only Mitzna can! Not Likud."

A latest opinion poll conducted for the mainstream Ha'aretz Daily shows that the Sharon-led Likud would get a record 41 parliamentary seats in the 16th Knesset, while the Labor would get only 20 seats.
