Coal gas poisoning has killed eight people in Hefei, capital of east China's Anhui province, so far this winter, local police announced Saturday.

More than 50 coal gas poisoning cases have been reported this winter, mostly caused by poor ventilation in apartments where coal was burned for heating, the police said.

The latest case was reported Friday, when an elderly couple were found unconscious in their home by their son. Emergency aid personnel attended, but the man was already dead when they arrived. His wife was in deep coma and was taken to hospital.

Police investigation showed that both the door and windows of the couple's apartment were closed, while the coal in the stove had almost burned out.
