Hosts China Snatch Medals before End of World Cup Speed Skating

Chinese young skater Yu Fengtong seized silver in men's 500 meters competition in 35.83 seconds at the second leg of the World Cup speed skating in Harbin on Sunday, which has been the best result for Chinese male skaters inworld-class tournaments since 1994.

World Cup Speed Skating in China
Chinese young skater Yu Fengtong seized silver in men's 500 meters competition in 35.83 seconds at the second leg of the World Cup speed skating in Harbin on Sunday, which has been the best result for Chinese male skaters in world-class tournaments since 1994.

Chinese veteran Wang Manli took bronze in women's 500 meters division in 38.97 on Sunday before the end of the two-day World Cup held by China for the first time.

Wang, who had come third twice in the division at the Japan leg of the World Cup, did not perform well on Saturday and only finished seventh in 39.46 on the first day of the China leg.

Canadian Jeremy Wotherspoon eased to the first place again in men's 500 meters division on Sunday. But his winning time was 35.72, quite slower than 35.43 he got on Saturday in the same stadium.

The skaters of the Netherlands swept the three medals of the men's 1,000 meters competition on the second day of the World Cup.Jan Bos clinch the gold in 1:10.51. His compatriot Erben Wennemars crossed the finish line first on Saturday in 1:10.16 but Wennemars finished third on Sunday in 1:10.96.

German veteran Monique Garbrecht-Engeldt collected the titles of women's 500 meters and 1,000 meters competitions again in 38.75and 1:17.01 respectively. The four gold medals enabled her to top the gold tally.

The second leg of the 2002-2003 World Speed Skating Federation World Cup has attracted 84 skaters from 12 countries and regions. It was the first time for China to host such high level speed skating tournament.

China has sent 13 male and female skaters to the World Cup. However, most of them had to compete in B groups because they were less competitive. Athletes boasting good results before were all grouped in A groups.
