More than 100 leaders of China's manufacturing industry reached a "Suzhou Consensus" Sunday at a two-day forum to discuss ways of improving the industry and China's economic growth.

The participants, mostly management professionals from across the country's manufacturing sector, agreed that developed countries all had advanced manufacturing industries, whereas manufacturing industries in developing countries always lagged farbehind.

The economic accomplishments of the past two decades achieved by Suzhou and elsewhere in China had proved that the manufacturing had been, was and would be a vital driving force for the country's economic growth.

They noted that the development of manufacturing would help create employment opportunities, speed up urbanization and cope with problems in the rural areas. The vigorous growth of manufacturing would make China still more competitive internationally.

They, however, hold that there was still a long way to go for China to become a manufacturing giant.

They urged the government to create a still more favorable environment for the development of the country's manufacturing industry.

The forum ended Sunday in Suzhou, an important manufacturing base in east China's Jiangsu province.
