The support rate for Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's cabinet dropped substantially to around 50% in the latest telephone polls conducted separately by two major newspapers over the weekend.

The Mainichi Shimbun reported Monday that such support fell to 49% from 64% in a previous survey in October, while disapproval rose to 28% from 21%.

''Given that 70% of those polled called for an economic policy stressing boosting the economy, the drop in support appears to have stemmed from dissatisfaction over the prolonged recession,'' the Mainichi said.

The Asahi Shimbun, meanwhile, said the same day that support for Koizumi's cabinet tumbled to 54% from 65% in a previous poll in November. Disapproval climbed to 32% from 23%.

''As to reasons for disapproval, an increasing number of people cited frustration over policies, and 60% of those surveyed said Koizumi cannot demonstrate leadership in the highway reform initiative,'' the Asahi said.

The Mainichi Shimbun also reported that support for the key opposition Democratic Party of Japan, which elected a new leader last Tuesday, edged down to 6% from 7% in October.

Both newspapers conducted their polls on Saturday and Sunday. The Asahi's poll is based on responses from 2,037 people, and Mainichi's covered 1,029 people.
