China on Monday signed bilateral population cooperation agreements with Thailand and Indonesia, separately on the sidelines of the ongoing fifth Asia-Pacific Population Conference (APPC).

"The agreements are aimed to strengthen our cooperation with the two countries in the fields of reproductive healthcare and family planning and to support international efforts in addressing population issues," said Zhang Weiqing, head of China's State Family Planning Commission, after inking the deals with Thai Health Minister Sudarat Keyuraphan and Yaumil Achir, chairman of Indonesia's National Family Planning Coordinating Board, respectively.

The two agreements focus on the same terms, including enhancing bilateral exchange of related government officials and experience, organizing joint training courses for related officials and experts, conducting joint research and marketing campaign for reproductive healthcare products and enhancing cooperation in addressing HIV/AIDS.

Zhang told both Thai and Indonesian officials that China will stick to its commitment made to the 1994 International Population and Development Conference and adopt a people-centered approach in providing reproductive healthcare service and will promote women's status and the living standards of all Chinese people.

The two-day 5th APPC opened here Monday morning, gathering some 500 officials and experts from over 40 countries in the region. Itis organized by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and the local-based UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) under the theme of "population and poverty."

The last APPC was held in the Indonesian resort of Bali ten years ago.
