Shanghai Port has handled 8 million containers so far this year, becoming the biggest on the Chinese mainland, the Shanghai Port Authority said Tuesday.

The number makes Shanghai one of the major international container ports in the world, according to the authority.

The figure is close to that of Kaohsiung in China's island province of Taiwan, which ranks fourth in the world in terms of container handling capacity.

Shanghai Port launched its container handling service to and from Australia in 1978, when China introduced the policy of reform and opening to the outside.

It handled a mere 2,000 standard containers that year, but the figure surged to 100,000 in 1984, one million in 1994, 2 million in 1996, 4.21 million in 1999 and 6.34 million last year.

Experts said the fast growth was underpinned by rapid economic development in the port's vast hinterland, and improvement in its handling capacity.

The port's cargo handling capacity increased to 100 million tons in 1984, and 200 million tons in 2000, becoming the third largest port in the world after Rotterdam and Singapore.

To date, the port, which plans to become an international shipping center, has established shipping relations with over 400 ports around the world.

The port authority said it is likely to reach the target of 10 million containers next year, one year ahead of schedule.
