Crime Rate in Chinese Capital Down 7.9 Percent

The crime rate in the Chinese capital of Beijing dropped 7.9 percent in the first 11 months of this year from the same period of last year, a spokesman for the Beijing Public Security Bureau said Tuesday.

The crime rate in the Chinese capital of Beijing dropped 7.9 percent in the first 11 months of this year from the same period of last year, a spokesman for the Beijing Public Security Bureau said Tuesday.

In the first 11 months of the year, the police investigated a total of 39,349 criminal cases, cracked 2,196 criminal gangs and retrieved stolen money and goods worth a total of 250 million yuan(30 million US dollars), the spokesman said.

Beijing police restored basic public order in 47 sites in 53 high-crime areas, and residents of those areas registered a 92 percent approval rating with the police's work.

In the same period, the police arrested 4,289 prostitutes and pimps and closed down 196 brothels and 3,292 pornographic entertainment institutions, according to the spokesman.
