Spanish automobile companies are seeking to enter the Chinese market, following their counterparts in other major auto producing countries in the world.

The Spanish government set up a pavilion at the fifth international auto show which closed Tuesday in Guangzhou, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, the only government pavilion at the exhibition.

"People should first meet each other and then fall in love and get married. It is the same with auto companies," said Angel Jorquera, an official with the Foreign Commerce Institute of Spain."They came to Guangzhou to meet Chinese companies and make partnerships."

He added the Spanish government places great importance on the Chinese market and hopes that with its efforts, more joint ventureauto and auto part factories will be founded.

"Cities such as Tianjin (in north China) and Wuhan (in central China) will be good for Spanish companies," Jorquera said.

The Spanish government has set up business offices in Beijing and Shanghai acting as agencies between companies from the two countries.

Irizar, the largest bus maker in Spain, was the first from the Spanish automotive industry that set up a joint venture in China. In 1994, Irizar and Tianjin company launched a bus joint venture in the northern China port city, and the joint venture now has become one of the three largest bus manufacturers in China.
