United States President George W. Bush is expected to pay a seven-day visit to Africa beginning from Jan. 10 next year, according to a statement available in Lagos on Wednesday.

The statement from the United States embassy in Nigeria said the visit was "to continue to build America's partnership with the continent."

"This visit highlights the Bush administration's commitment to working toward a free and prosperous Africa," the statement said.

During the visit, Bush would open the 2nd US-sub-Sahara Africantrade and economic cooperation forum in Mauritius, the document said.

The statement did not mention the countries Bush is expected tovisit. The Nigerian government earlier this month announced that the US president will visit the west African country in January atthe instance of his Nigerian counterpart Olusegun Obasanjo.

Two former US presidents recently visited Africa. They are Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, both of whom visited Nigeria in 1978 and 2000 respectively.
