A ferocious tornado swept through 384 villages in Zhanjiang City of south China's Guangdong Province from Thursday to early Friday morning, killing one person.

Some 110 others were injured and 20 people are still missing.

The tornado touched down in Guangdong Thursday afternoon accompanied by a hurricane, thunderstorms and hailstones. The largest chunk of ice weighed 35 kg.

Some parts of Tongming Village in the Mazhang District saw a 80-cm-thick layer of hailstones. Eight fishing vessels were overturned. The hail damaged crops and vegetables, toppled down trees and took the roofs off houses.

In Leizhou City, seven people were sent to hospital after beinghit by hailstones.

Zhang Dejiang, secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, immediately organized efforts to rescue the missing. Officials from Zhanjiang City sent relief materials to the stricken areas and organized local residents to repair damaged houses and replant crops.
