Information technology (IT) is an important tool to improve the productivity and competitiveness for Hong Kong's manufacturing industry, Director of Information Technology Services (ITSD) Alan Wong Chi-kong said Friday in Hong Kong.

Speaking at the "International Technology Conference: Information and Communication Technology for Manufacturing", Wong noted that the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government was committed to supporting the development of the manufacturing industry through the leverage offered by IT.

According to Wong, applications like computer aided design, computer aided manufacturing, computer aided industrial design, automation, digitized machinery and workstation are now extensively used in structural design and 3-D product design in Hong Kong.

Successful deployment of these tools will shorten the product development cycle and reduce "time to market," he pointed out.

Moreover, with the advent of IT, the industry can also utilize many other computer solutions such as enterprise resources planning, manufacturing resources planning, supply chain management and logistics management to improve their processes andadopt best practices in support of the manufacturing cycle and itsmanagement, Wong added.

In Wong's opinion, the application of IT could increase the transparency of the production line and keep track of the deliveryprocess, which is key to customer satisfaction.

HKSAR government statistics released in 2002 showed that the percentage of manufacturing companies using personal computers andhaving Internet connections were 40 percent and 30 percent respectively. Wong held that there was still room for the industryto increase its competitiveness by making use of IT.

Organized by the Hong Kong Productivity Council, co-organized by the ITSD and funded by the United Nations Development Programme, the conference is designed to present the forefront development ofe-Manufacturing information, communication and technology to manufacturers around the world.
