Like many of the movies produced by the famous Chinese director, Zhang Yimou, "Hero" invited both applause and questions at its debut at midnight on Friday.

It was the first time in Chinese movie history that a film debut took place at midnight. Five of the top cinemas in Beijing, including the Dahua and the Dizhi participated in the "Midnight debut".

Despite the light snow, hundreds of people gathered at the New Oriental Cinema on Wangfujing Street to wait for the opening of "Hero". "The show is sold out," said a cinema staff member.

Some foreign moviegoers were sitting in a nearby cafe, drinkingsoda and discussing the movie. "We are also interested in the martial arts."

"I'm sure it will be a success," said Zhang Xin, a Chinese girl,as she entered the cinema, "because it's directed by Zhang Yimou."

"The ninety minutes were full of elegant visual and aural images," said Liu Dan, delightedly discussing the movie with her boyfriend. "Just like a dream!"

Video cameras were awaiting viewers as they left the theater toget early reviews.

Liang Jianzhong, a college professor, seemed dissatisfied with the movie: "Isn't the plot too simplistic? It has a noble theme, but the plot is not very well-developed."

At the same time, at Dizhi, over 70 percent of seats were sold out. "We are eager to see for ourselves after hearing the opinionsof others," said some college students awaiting entry.

When all of the assassins died at the end of the movie, some people wiped away tears. "They died a solemn and stirring death," said someone, "but I don't hate the King."

"Very good film. The scenes are quite inviting," said another viewer.

Another viewer offered criticism, asking, "How could a foreigner understand the motives for the surrender of the assassins at the end?" said Xue Can, an assistant manager in a consulting office, "there is too little historical background provided in the movie."
