China's ports now have more than 33,441 productive berths nationwide, including 810 berths for ships above 10,000 dead weight tonnage (DWT).

The amount of cargo China handled at these berths went up from 300 million tons in 1979 when it had just introduced its reform and opening-up drive to 2.4 billion tons in 2001, said Zhang Chunxian, Minister of Communications, while addressing a recent national meeting on the construction of port infrastructure in Shanghai.

Of that total, export cargo rose from 70 million tons in 1979 to 650 million tons last year. The number of containers handled by Chinese ports also went up from 400,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit) in 1986 to 27.48 million TEUs last year, according to Zhang.

Shanghai leads the seven ports each handling 100 million tons of cargo annually. Shanghai and Shenzhen ports are ranked 5th and the 8th in the world for handling 6.34 million and 5.08 million container TEUs respectively.

Both Shanghai and Shenzhen ports are expected to handle 8.4 million and 7.5 million container TEUs this year.
